The Corn Grinder

Housing in Stångby

In the station community of Stångby, five kilometers north of Lund, the buildings are small-scale. A variety of housing types and a well-thought-out structure create good conditions for a favorable microclimate and a varied, experiential spatiality.

The location

The Kornknarren neighborhood was designed with the garden city as its ideal. Here we find low-rise buildings, gardens, traditionally planned streets, squares, and green spaces. The materials draw inspiration from the surrounding brick buildings with banded sheet metal roofing. This helps the buildings blend in with their surroundings, where the scale is lower and more sparse. The inspiration for bay windows, recessed balconies, and gabled roofs also comes from the surrounding buildings.

Patterned brickwork is used to accentuate the stairwells, but also pays homage to the simple brickwork found throughout Stångby.

The architecture

The scale is generally three stories plus an attic. To the east, the townhouses meet the existing brick houses with their orchards. Around the patios on the ground floor, low brick-capped walls form the boundary between public and private, contributing to better use of the outdoor space. With solid materials such as wrought iron, shingle roofs, and oak entrance doors, the standard is slightly higher than what is customary in rental properties.

The bricks are red Petersen bricks in two different colors. It is a material that ages with dignity and gives residents every reason to feel proud of their homes.
